Hindsight 20/20
As we look back on 2020, one thing is crystal clear: workers, families, businesses and the overall economy need greater economic resilience. The COVID-19 crisis rapidly pushed families and businesses over the edge and into financial ruin, with disproportionate impacts on Black and Brown communities.
So what did we learn in 2020, and what lessons can we carry into 2021?
We must rebuild an economy that is fundamentally more equitable and resilient— one that creates real economic security for families.
Employee Ownership must be a key part of the recovery.
In 2020, we witnessed the incredible resiliency of the employee-owned companies we support and their workers (see Chuck’s quote below). A recent national study (October 2020) corroborates this: employee-owned companies were more likely to keep their employees safe and 3 to 4 times less likely to lay them off during the pandemic.
Foresight 2021
As 2020 moves into our rearview mirror, Project Equity is laser focused on ensuring that we expand the benefits of employee ownership to more low-wage workers, families of color and communities nationwide.
Why?
Because Employee Ownership keeps workers safer and employed, creates wealth-building pathways for low-wage workers and workers of color, and keeps local businesses open—even during a pandemic and a recession.
As we look ahead to 2021, we need your help to:
- Create more employee-owners
- Serve more small businesses
- Launch programs in new regions around the country (stay tuned for details in 2021)
- Spread the word about the power of employee ownership

“Whereas the world was experiencing an economic downturn, we had a hiccup. We got together and really went after it and we delivered unprecedented growth … And we made sure we had a place to work—this place that we own. In a world where businesses are literally closing, we worked hard to stay afloat.”
